Michelin Star Siew Yuk: Wong Mei Kee

May 1, 2024 by StrawberrY Gal

Located  in the bustling heart of Pudu lies Wong Mei Kee Pudu, a restaurant that has become synonymous with one thing: legendary roast pork. Known by various names like Wong Kee or Wong Meng Kee, this unassuming eatery draws a dedicated following, willing to brave Pudu’s infamous traffic and limited opening hours (12:30 PM to 3 PM, or sell-out) for a taste of their prized siew yoke (燒肉).

Social media has only fueled the flames of Wong Mei Kee’s fame, turning it into a must-visit for any serious foodie in Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant opens precisely at 12:30 PM, and by then, securing a table is a feat in itself.

The queue for takeaways starts forming even earlier, a testament to the restaurant’s loyal clientele. Unlike most places, pre-orders are a foreign concept at Wong Mei Kee. Patience is key, especially for takeaway customers, who take a backseat to dine-in patrons until service officially begins.

But for many, including the siew yoke-obsessed like us, the wait and the occasional parking struggle are mere hurdles on the path to culinary bliss.  So, what exactly makes Wong Mei Kee’s roast pork so special?

The answer lies in the sheer perfection of their siew yoke. It’s a symphony of textures and flavors. Each sliceboasts a meticulously balanced ratio of lean and fat
meat, with the pork boasting a beautiful pinkish hue just beneath the surface. The crackling skin is a masterpiece – a shattering testament to their expert roasting technique. Every bite is a revelation: juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor, akin to sinking your teeth into melt-in-your-mouth marbled meat.

Despite rising prices, the allure of Wong Mei Kee’s roast pork remains undeniable. It’s a testament to the power of tradition and unwavering dedication to culinary excellence. This is more than just a meal; it’s a pilgrimage for any true siew yoke enthusiast.
